Wonders from the history of Šalek.
From the ice age to the fellowship values of the recent past.
Velenje, considered a true socialist wonder with its economic development in Yugoslavia, has preserved the values of multiculturalism, mining fellowship and socialist solidarity. It connects them with ancient stories about mastodons from the ice age, life in castles and centuries old rural homesteads, and crafts performed in the squares of Šaleška Valley. The special features from the past are revealed at Velenje Museum and thematic museums, such as the Coal Mining Museum of Slovenia and the Museum of Tanning in Slovenia.
In the valley, you see a large statute of Tito, the former President of socialist Yugoslavia, in the city centre square, and experience nostalgia from the recent past, Velenje when it was one of Slovenia’s most important economic centres and Šoštanj city of power.
